EverReady Engine Co. 3 of the Riverhead Fire Department held its inspection and installation at Blackwell’s on Jan. 29.

Those installed by Chief Joe Raynor and assistant chief Kevin Brooks are: Kenny Nabrezny, captain; Joe Hartmann, 1st lieutenant; Greg Szlejer, 2nd lieutenant; Joe Bernat, secretary; and Frank Totten, treasurer. Congratulations! Firefighters Rich Miller and Leslie Moore were recognized for their 20 years of service and ex-chief Kevin Davis for his 30 years of service. Georgette Case presented the A. Lloyd Case Award to firefighter Donald Owen. This is Donald’s second time receiving this award for his hard work and dedication to the fire company. Ex-member and ex-captain Kenny Davis also attended. Everyone was happy he was able to be a part of the festivities, as well as my husband, Joe, who also attended. Other than Christmas Day, this was only the second time he was able to go out for a few hours. He enjoyed seeing all the members and having dinner with Georgette.

Today is day 66 at the Riverhead Care Center for my husband, who is doing quite well and continuing his daily routine going to physical therapy. He also continues to keep busy with all the activities the recreation department provides for its residents. He is enjoying chatting with new residents Paul Osip, John Luce and Helen Fincer, all of whom he has known for years and are also there for rehab. Joe’s sister, Ellen Kramer, is also going to rehab there. She would like to thank her family and friends for their visits, cards and flowers. Once again, thanks to all who are keeping Joe in their prayers and for the cards and phone calls. We are hoping he will soon be back home with his family as we miss him very much.

Louise Wilkinson and I attended the 130th anniversary celebration of Suffolk County Historical Society, where the Honorable Peter F. Cohalan discussed “The History of Suffolk County and Its Ten Founding Towns.” The presentation was awesome and very interesting. Louise bought a book, “Descendants of Captain John Prince of Southold, New York, and Their Place in Local History,” compiled by Helen Wright Prince. Louise’s family (Drumm) is listed on pages 153 and 154. Remarkably, her aunt Deborah Ann Drumm celebrated her 90th birthday that afternoon in Southold.

Here’s a gentle reminder that the brunch buffet to benefit the restoration of First Congregational Church of Riverhead — originally slated for Jan. 24 but canceled due to the snowstorm — has been rescheduled to Sunday, Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dark Horse Tavern on Main Street in Riverhead. Cost: adults, $20; children, $10; children under 3, free. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 631-727-6160.

While there, why not browse the displays? Also, “Love Your Library” week will be celebrated Feb. 14-21. Stop in and enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee, tea or lemonade and cookies courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Any late fees incurred during this week will be waived.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Riverhead Fire Department will once again host its winter breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 28, from 8 a.m. to noon at the firehouse on Roanoke Avenue. Cost: adults, $12; seniors, $10; children ages 5-12, $5; children under 5, free. Tickets are available at the door or by calling co-chairladies Allison Dick, 631-258-4797, or Gina Hubbard, 631-365-6289. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and chinese auction. The Suffolk Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held their February meeting at the home of member Georgette Case.

Chaplain Caroline Stepnoski led the members in the invocation prayer and the guest speaker was Louise Wilkinson, who presented a program on community service connections and how it impacts the lives of all involved. After lunch was served, grace — with a Valentine’s theme — was said by Chaplain Caroline Stepnoski. It was a very enjoyable time for everyone.

A ‘Sweethearts Tea’ was held Feb. 12 at the Riverhead Care Center. Ten couples attended this special event in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Naturally, my husband, Joe, and I were there, along with Helen and Antone Condzella, who have been married 55 years; John and Dottie Bogdan; and Ellen and Nes Kramer, to name a few. Kristin Abzug always does a great job organizing the functions for the residents. Sharon Blumstein, president of the Riverhead Care Council, helped to serve the refreshments. Joe’s been at the center recovering for 81 days. He is enjoying the recreational activities and visiting all the friends he’s made. He thanks those who have been visiting and for the cards he is continuing to receive.

Cathleen Walter is hosting her sixth annual blood drive on Sunday, Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Isidore School, where she is a teacher. Her goal this year is 50 pints. Remember, the gift of donating blood is the gift of life. It is hoped the Riverhead community will help Cathleen reach her goal while helping out the blood banks.

Riverhead United Methodist Church will show the movie “War Room,” an adult, Christian movie about the power of prayer, on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. A children’s movie will also be shown at that time. The community is invited to attend. The church’s evangelism committee wants to share their love by having families come together. Hope you can join them for a wonderful Sunday afternoon.

It’s that time of year again to hear “peep, peep, peep” at Riverhead Free Library. It just wouldn’t be spring without a visit from the chicks. The eggs will be arriving on Monday, Feb. 29, with the chicks hatching around March 21. You are invited to visit them through the 25th.

Need homework help? Thinking about buying an e-reader but worried about downloads? Make an appointment with the Youth and Family Services librarian to learn more about the many offerings, including online tutoring, downloadable audio and e-books, TumbleBooks, Pronunciator, research databases and so much more. For more information, call 631-727-3228.

Happy birthday to Kendall Van Houten, Phil Kenter and Jaclyn Meyer on Feb. 18; John Kowalski, Kim Barnes and Peggy Sparrow, Feb. 19; Greg Hulse and Mary Kenter, Feb. 20; Antonio DeGrasse, Delanie Warner and Paula Smith, Feb. 21; Teresa Kulhan, Jorge Ortiz, Nick Grefe, Jocelyn Halikias, Michael Doroski, Candee Loper, Shaun Bulak, Liz Atkinson and Brian Cheshire, Feb. 22; Bill Kelly, Sandra Doroski, Christina Sacchitello, Jeffrey Paulick and Jean Marie Costello-Quinn, Feb. 23; Dot Madonia, Feb. 24; Dawn Jasinski, Nes Kramer, Claudia Popolizio and Sharon Anderson, Feb. 25; Melinda Young, David Lantz and Lynda Myrden, Feb. 26; Leah Sparrow, Feb. 27; and my husband, Joe Berezny, who turns 62, Feb. 28.

Happy wedding anniversary to Tim and Michon Griffing on Feb. 19.

Get well wishes to Emmy Case.

There’s an extra day in February this year … enjoy!

Members of the Suffolk Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently gathered for their annual tea honoring local high school winners of DAR’s Good Citizens Award. The winners — Juliet Fusco, a senior at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School, and Claire Beaver, a senior at Westhampton Beach High School — were then selected to compete at the district-level competition. Both Claire and Juliet were presented with a DAR certificate and pin and given a small monetary award. Nicholas Waldron of Riverhead High School also won the Good Citizen Award but was not present. She is currently president of the Tesla Science Center.

The U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program recently got a big boost from the Riverhead Applebee’s. The restaurant’s annual Breakfast With Santa raised $11,879 to benefit underprivileged children during the holidays.

My husband, Joe, is on the road to recovery and is doing quite well considering all he has gone through. The surgeon has allowed him to drive and thus begins physical therapy to strengthen his core muscles. Thanks for the cards, calls and well wishes!

Riverhead Free Library celebrated its 120th anniversary on April 2, with special proclamations presented by Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo, state Sen. Ken LaValle, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Congressman Lee Zeldin.

The recipients were RFL interim director Kathleen Richter and board president Kathy Berezny (me!). The theme at the circulation desk was “The Cat in the Hat.” Clerks Arianne DePhillips, Rasheima Alvardo, Nykel Reese and Cassie Rankel were dressed according to the theme in costumes made by Margie Santiago. The Long Island Room, which many residents didn’t know existed, displayed first-edition books and books about Riverhead community history. Guests were amazed by the quality of the display. A memory board was also created and will remain on display all year. If you have any memories of the library you’d like to share, send an email to board@riverheadlibrary.org.

After the presentations and ceremony all were invited to enjoy refreshments served by Friends of the Library’s Linda Bartunek and Joyce Rienzo, with help from Jane Hill and Rosalie Del Quaglio. On April 11 the Lynch girls — 2-year-old Madelyn, her grandmother Michele, and Madelyn’s mom, Kris (Fuerman) — were in Washington, D.C., and had a photo op with Hillary Clinton.

Also, at Michele’s request, Hillary signed a copy of “Call Me Madame President” by Sue Pyatt for Madelyn. What an exciting day it was for all three of them.

John and Pat Kurpetski recently spent a glorious time in sunny Costa Rica. They enjoyed beautiful sunsets on the Pacific Ocean, wake-up calls by monkeys on their terrace and magnificent views. They said the nightly entertainment/shows were also great and they were able to relax by the pool.

Riverhead High School graduate Jack Barnes started writing the book “Dirt Poor” after his retirement in 2013. Upon its completion and after waiting another year for it to be published, the book is now available for purchase online at Amazon. It is a history of Riverhead and depicts his life as a child with his father and grandfather. Jack wanted to tell his story that no matter how hard life can be you still can survive. Jack has also been featured twice in Newsday articles. Those who grew up in Riverhead can certainly relate to his story.

The Riverhead Garden Club will celebrate its 85th anniversary with a luncheon Wednesday, June 8, at the Inn at East Wind in Wading River from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be floral designs by Theresa Soto, a three-course lunch and raffles. Tickets are $45; reserve by June 1. Call Luci Mueller at 631-722-4288.

Happy wedding anniversary to Brian and Monique Gablenz on April 26; Barbara and Joe Vail, May 4; John and Stacy Seal, their 21st, May 6; and Cheryl (Berezny) and Gil Michaelis, their 3rd, May 11.

Happy birthday to Haleigh Miller (who turns 10) today, April 28; Kyle Harris, April 30; Kristen and Emily Brophy, May 1; Peter Friszolowski, May 2; Diane Gianni, Joe Arnau and Tina Atkinson, May 3; Kevin Curtis, Brian Block and Anthony and Felicia Miles, May 4; Amari Langhorne and Russell Murray, May 5; Walter Paulick, Regina Kenter and Howie Gassert, May 6; Irene Karzenski, Emilee Downs and Kurt Carter, May 7; Wendy Keenan and Sue Edwards, May 8; Louise Wilkinson and Donna Czajkowski, May 9; and Kevin Schuhmann, May 10.

It’s been difficult for me to contemplate the passing of a dear friend, Renee Linnen, who worked at the Riverhead Care Center forever and loved her job. I would see her all the time when she was working while my mother was a resident there and more recently when my husband, Joe, was in rehab there. Joe and Renee went to school together and we shared many wonderful times with her and her family — at the beach, at playgroup with our children, Fourth of July parties, fire department functions and so much more. It is so surreal that she is no longer here. Love you, Renee. You were a special friend to all but God has taken you home and you are now among the angels. My deepest sympathy to her beautiful family.

Have a Happy Mother’s Day! Be sure to call or email or send a card/write a letter to that special woman in your life and say thank you.

I’d like to welcome Kathy Kruel, columnist for Flanders, Riverside and Northampton. I’m looking forward to reading your column, as I’m sure so are many others. Good luck to you, Kathy, and enjoy writing.

Thelma Booker would like to thank Peconic Bay Medical Center Auxiliary’s family and friends who attended its Birthday Calendar Brunch on April 28. A special thanks goes out to those who attended from Mather Hospital, the ladies from Riverhead Town’s senior citizen nutrition center, and those who came from as far away as Connecticut, Maryland and Georgia. The event was a huge success. Thanks again, everyone.

Barbara Wooten enjoyed a week and a half in Raleigh, N.C., with her daughter’s family, then traveled to Georgia to visit her cousin Thyra and her husband, Tony Burakowski. Barbara then headed to South Carolina to visit with a friend and her family, Kate and Joe Biamonte, and then returned to North Carolina to spend a week with her daughter’s family, Amy (Wooten) Guecha and grandchildren Alex and Emma. While there, she helped celebrate Emma’s first birthday. Barbara also visited her cousin Nancy Needham, who lives just outside of Raleigh. She also enjoyed seeing Duke University Gardens and visited more family, cousins Marie and Chris Mood, in Delaware. Barbara is now home and has lots of great pictures and memories.

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a food drive to help stock the shelves at local pantries Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to noon at Walmart on Route 58. Donating is easy because they give you a list of necessary non-perishable items while you’re doing your own shopping.

The Knights of Columbus will also be hosting its Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, May 22, from 8 a.m. to noon in the auditorium at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. Charlie Drowns and members are working hard to help the Riverhead community by supporting local charities. Proceeds will go to the Life Center of Long Island on Main Street. They are in need of baby items, volunteers and donations. Check them out on Facebook or call 631-591-9017 for more information.

Riverhead United Methodist Church’s thrift shop is now open for the season. Stop by and take a look at the new items they’ve accumulated over the winter. Donations of gently used items are accepted on Thursdays and Saturdays. For more information, call the church office at 631-727-2327.

Don’t forget to purchase tickets for The Woman’s Club of Riverhead’s annual scholarship luncheon, to be held Thursday, May 19, at Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue. The cost is $45 per person. There will be a chinese auction, 50/50 and a door prize. They will also be awarding five $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. For more information or to make a reservation, call Evie Buhner at 631-369-9238.

Jim and Cathy Breitenbach send belated 90th birthday wishes and lots of love to Cathy’s mom, Irene Hughes, who celebrated May 7.

It was a beautiful evening. As a thank-you, John’s wife, Pat, was presented with a floral arrangement.

While eating breakfast July 9 at Lolly’s Hut, Barbara Mongelout was thoroughly surprised with a special birthday cake and round of birthday wishes from Lolly and her crew. Everyone wished Barbara a truly happy birthday. Leftover cake was wrapped up so she could share a piece with her husband, Peter, at Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Riverhead Free Library will celebrate its 120th birthday from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Osborne Avenue will be blocked off and there will be lots of family fun, including DJ Tom Damiani; Irish step dancers from Kyleen Vernon’s dance studio, My Pulse My Passion; a display of Native American artifacts; a table celebrating veterans and books donated by Gretchen Martens, the “Veteran Lady” who wrote “Untying the Yellow Ribbon,” which depicts transforming how veterans and communities thrive; bubbles for children; goody bags for the entire family; and so much more. Also, special guest county Legislator Al Krupski should be on hand to present a proclamation for this special year for RFL. Bring your beach chair and enjoy an afternoon of fun! Call the library for more information, 631-727-3228.

A woodcarving display at the library presents the work of Angel Santiago, whose pieces feature Dr. Seuss, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, M&M candy figures and much more. Angel took an interest in woodworking when he saw gentlemen carving at a Riverhead Country Fair booth many years ago, when they were raffling off a Noah’s Ark. So he asked them questions, got some tips on how to do it and his hobby began. Take some time to check out Angel’s collection, which is getting bigger and bigger — he said at some point he will need to part with some carvings. If you’re interested in any, you can email him at liwoodcarver@gmail.com. It is simply amazing work.

Booked for Lunch will be held at the library Friday, July 22, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Bring your lunch and join the adult and information librarians as they introduce some of the latest authors and fiction and non-fiction titles. Drinks and cookies will be served.

The Knights of Columbus will again be at Best Yet Market in Riverhead for their food drive to help St. John’s pantry on Saturday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to noon. Grand Knight Charlie Drowns and his members do a great job, working hard to fill the needs of the community. They will also be holding a food drive from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Riverhead Stop and Shop to fill the pantry at St. Isidore. Be sure to mark your calendars and say hello to the group as they do what they love while volunteering.

Happy birthday wishes go to Joseph Doremus and Bill Bilskii today, July 21; Brenda Boyd and Susan Miles, July 22; Debbie Fisher, Matthew and Andrew Van der Creek and Kyle Warner, July 23; Sheila Muller, Bernie Hettrick and Gail Yeager, July 24; Roseanne Berezny and Dave Hartmayer, July 26; Christopher Costantini, July 27; Pat Carey, Jim Grace and Linda Mueller, July 28; Anna Pekar, July 29; Michon Griffing, Frederica Miles and Marilyn Blumstein, July 30; Jacob Lawrence, who turns three on July 31; Zach Daters, Aug. 1; Sue Arnau, Pat Contino and Nicole Mielnicki (who turns 23) on Aug. 2; and Nicole and Kim Staib, Aug. 3.

Knights of Columbus, Immaculate Conception Council 928, held its monthly meeting recently at the American Legion. Each year, two $500 scholarships are awarded to students entering high school in the fall.

An essay focusing on the commitment of being a Catholic in society today is required. One of this year’s scholarship winners is Kiara McGaughey, who will be attending Sacred Heart Academy. Kiara’s parents, Kristin and James, sisters, Aislinn and Shae, and grandparents Madeline and John Altadonna are so happy for her. Gildea Delbianco, the other scholarship recipient, wasn’t present. He’ll be attending Bishop McGann-Mercy in the fall. After eight years, Carmine Cioffi will no longer be presenting the awards. John Dunleavy will have that honor next year.

Glenwood Village resident Dottie Coakley, author of “Chattanooga Girl,” was invited to discuss her book and do a reading Aug. 13 at Nesconset Library. She had a great time at the event, where she also signed several copies for patrons. She has also been asked to speak at Riverhead Landing and to Southampton Rotarians. Good luck, Dottie. Check her out on Facebook.

Battle of the Books team “The Wily Wizards of the Sofa” represented Riverhead Free Library at the 20th anniversary of the competition, held Aug. 13 at Stony Brook University. Forty-two Suffolk County libraries were represented. Each of the four rounds consisted of 20 questions. The Riverhead team players were: Lila Bowe, Morgan Dunn, Emma Eager, Lily Kutner, Cora Purcell, Danica Teresky, and alternate Kate Foley. Their coach was Joyce Rienzo (Youth and Family Services librarian at RFL), who was assisted by Annie Kromhout and past team members Alexis Schmidt and Kaleigh Teresky. The full team consisted of: Bianca Bossey, John Foley, Charles Hilles, Sarah Jones, Ryken Kutner, Ravi Manucha, Jesse Meehan, Quinn McCabe, Khushi Patel, Kayla Reitz, Kaitlin Schmidt, Robert Wagner and Ava Augustyn. Everyone is already looking forward to next year’s Battle of the Books.

Joyce would like to thank the Friends of Riverhead Free Library for supporting this wonderful reading program. Each year they help support the library by purchasing books for each member, costumes and more. What a wonderful group! Thank you, Friends!

Joe and I went to Ocean City, Md., with friends last week. Although it was hot and humid, it was also sunny and beautiful. We walked the boardwalk, took a dip in the ocean and toured Secrets Distilling Company. I also couldn’t resist a visit to the library on the Coastal Highway. I bought many books, some of which I read during our ride home. My friends Steve, Grant and Linda from Rehoboth Beach, Del., met us and we enjoyed dinner together at Nick’s Original Ribs. We also took a drive to visit their new home. It was great catching up with them. Grant is into making clocks, one of which is proudly displayed in our home. It was a whirlwind five days!

Riverhead VFW Post 2476 will host a pancake breakfast Sunday, Sept. 11, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Cost: Adults, $10; children under 12, $5. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, home fries, coffee, tea and juice.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Riverhead will host a golf tournament Monday, Sept. 19, at Cherry Creek Golf Course. The event includes 18 holes of golf, a barbecue luncheon and much more. The cost is $200. Check-in is between 10:30 a.m. and noon. For more information, call Woody, 631-983-6277, or Jeff, 631-983-2975.

Also on Sept. 19, the Kiwanis will present “An Evening to Honor Our Heroes” at a dinner honoring Sgt. Hameed Armani and officer Peter Cybulski for their bravery, valor and quick thinking. On July 20 in Times Square, a man in an SUV approached their patrol vehicle and threw what appeared to be a bomb into it. Without hesitation, the officers drove off to find a less-populated area and called the bomb squad. It was later determined the device was a fake. The dinner will be held at 7 p.m. at Cherry Creek Golf Club on Reeves Avenue. Tickets are $75 and must be reserved. Call Louise Wilkinson at 631-463-5810.

Karen Fedun-White and I attended a pierogi-making class Friday at Riverhead Free Library led by Chef Rob Scott. We made and took home approximately 22 pierogis, some filled with potato and cheese, some with potato and sauerkraut. Dottie Bugdin also attended with some friends. The critics in my home — Joe and Josh — said the pierogis I made were pretty darn good. Check out the library’s newsletter to see the many programs being offered. You’ll be glad you did.

Happy birthday to Robin Hulse and Andre Alexsandrowicz on Sept. 1; Sharon Sparrow, Sept. 2; Kathy Paulos, Gilles Bouchard and Freddy Miles Jr., Sept. 5; Cheryl Luparella, Brendon Madonia and Meredith Bouchard, Sept. 6; Annie Marie Harris and James Carey, Sept. 9; Greg Meyer, Sept. 11; Steven Block and Ann Lennon, Sept. 12; and Brad Van Houten, Laura Van Houten and Cher Armstrong, Sept. 13.

Happy wedding anniversary to Peggy and Paul Sparrow on Sept. 1; Kristin and Jerry Halpin, Sept. 3; Michele and Tom Lynch, Sept. 4; Philip and Mary Kenter, their 59th, Sept. 7; Jason and Christine Floege, Sept. 10; and Joe and Dot Szot, their 56th, Sept. 11.

Get well wishes to Kay Davis and Phil Kieper.

School buses will soon be rolling and students will be crossing the streets. Make it safe for them and be on the lookout!

Best wishes to all for a great Labor Day!

On Sunday, Sept. 11, take a moment to remember those who perished that day, and fly the American flag. God bless America!

On Nov. 15, Kyle, Connor, Matthew and Maureen Karpilovsky ventured to NBC Studios in New York City to see a live taping of “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.” Connor managed to get four free tickets to the show, which will be aired on Matthew’s 26th birthday. They also had lunch at Mastro’s Steakhouse. Maureen and her sons enjoyed the show and said the The Roots were awesome and Jimmy’s staff was a lot of fun and very entertaining. They also enjoyed seeing the stars in person and getting a glimpse of what happens on and off camera. Maureen loves to spend time with her adult children. On Thanksgiving Eve she will be going with her daughter and friends to an Evanescence concert.

Gobble, gobble! Happy Thanksgiving. Be sure to give thanks for family and friends this holiday and enjoy dinner with all the trimmings.

Welcome to the first major snowstorm of the year! I hope your snowblowers and shovels worked to perfection while digging out the driveways, walkways and steps. What a beautiful winter wonderland it was.

Happy New Year! I’m hoping it will be a good year for all. We must take time to do the things we want to do, enjoy friendships and, of course, smell the roses.

Check out the chalk drawing at Riverhead Free Library. The artwork “May the Force Be With You” was done by Ariane DePhillips and Annie Kromhout to commemorate the memory of Carrie Fisher — Princess Leia. The “Rogue” and “Star Wars” artwork was also created by these two artists, who work at the library. They have such talent and it shines through. It’s definitely worth a trip to the library!

The library will host “Meet the Breeds” twice in January, on the 13th and the 27th, so be sure to mark your calendars. Tweens can still register for “The Battle Express,” which started Jan. 9. Also, “Medieval Puzzles and Enigmas,” a jousting game for the brain for grades 5-8, is being offered Friday, Jan. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Check out the many programs for all ages. Call 631-727-3228 for more information.

The adult and information services department at RFL has launched its annual Adult Winter Reading Club. This year’s theme is “Riverhead Reads: Food for Thought.” This self-guided program gives patrons a chance to win prizes for reading or listening to any book. Riverhead cardholders who wish to participate will receive a reading kit when they sign up. Prizes have been donated by Friends of the Riverhead Free Library.

Local author Bill Batcher will discuss his book “The Storytellers” Saturday, Jan. 14, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the library.
