Kelly Wooten and friends Mary Higgins-Maresco and Tom Higgins traveled to Paris, France, March 4-8 to celebrate Mary’s birthday. The trio toured Notre Dame and enjoyed the beautiful architecture and stained glass windows. At the Louvre, they saw the Mona Lisa and all the other beautiful pieces of art. They viewed the Eiffel Tower at night, which was simply spectacular with the lights flashing. No trip is complete without shopping along the Avenue des Champs-Elysees and taking time to enjoy dining to make this milestone birthday extra-special for Mary. Kelly took lots of pictures to remember the wonderful trip so that her family could enjoy them, and brought home a bottle of French wine for Easter for her mom, Barbara Wooten.

On March 13, the Riverhead Free Library teens, aka “Birds of Pay,” competed in the Suffolk County Advanced Battle of the Books. Colleen and Jim Marron are getting ready for the competition in Albany on May 2 with the L.I. Sound Chorus, a chapter of the Sweet Adelines International. The group held a retreat in January at St. Josephat’s in Glen Cove, with lots of coaching practice, and its membership drive from January through March was very successful. The chorus will have a dress rehearsal Wednesday, April 22, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School, where you can catch them rehearsing every Wednesday. Be sure to check them out. Maybe you’ll enjoy it so much you’ll become a member and sing to your heart’s delight.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Riverhead Fire Department elected officers April 8 for 2015-16. Elected were Connie Kenter, president; Ann Vonatzski, vice president ; Kelli Naugles, secretary; Michele Lynch, treasurer; Kathy Berezny, chaplain; and Carol Carey, sergeant-at-arms. Billee Friszolowski, a 69-year auxiliary member, has stepped down as sergeant-at-arms after serving for 25 consecutive years; she will retain the post of honorary sergeant-at-arms. It takes a strong-willed lady to do a volunteer job for all those years, and the Ladies Auxiliary appreciates her service and dedication. In June 2011, Gianna Volpe, then a staff writer at the News-Review, wrote about Billee’s accomplishments, and to honor Billee, we had the article framed and placed in the Riverhead Fire Department meeting room.

The Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge  No. 1742 and the Peconic Bay Medical Center Auxiliary invite you to a very special community event on Sunday, April 26, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Riverhead Moose Lodge on Madison Street. Tickets are $15 per person and include snacks, dinner and dessert. For tickets call Thelma Booker at 727-5898. She encourages everyone to “dress to impress and if you lose you still look good.” It will be a great afternoon of fun.

Check out the art by Riverhead Charter School students during the month of April at Riverhead Free Library. Also, the library’s program calendar is available there and on their website, riverheadlibrary.org. Thanks to all voted for the budget to ensure library programs continue.

Also at the library, in the Elizabeth Fox Overton Gallery through May 29, Don Duga (visual artist and noted animator) and Irra Verbitsky (independent film maker and fine artist) provide their individual artistic visions of life around us. Grandparents Wanda and Ziggy Wilinski and MaryBeth and Bert Bilunas are also excited about the addition to the family.

Congratulations also to Amy (Wooten) and Marco Guecha on the birth of their daughter, Emma Lizbeth, who arrived April 18 weighing 7 and a half pounds. All agree she is very sweet and adorable.

On April 14 Riverhead Free Library’s “Meet the Breed” program presented Riverhead police officers — two in uniform, two in fur. Officer and handler John Dosinski, with Vaki, his K9 patrol dog, and officer and handler John Morris with his dog, Rocky, gave a fine demonstration of teamwork. The dogs, both German shepherds, give 100 percent devotion to their handlers and to protecting us. The officers are to be commended for their 24-hour care and training to keep the dogs “on the ready.” In the audience were 12 students and adults who were amazed at the dogs’ size, the constant eye contact with their human partners, the commands given and the demonstration of the dogs’ skills based on their gift of scent.

The Battle of the Books at Riverhead Free Library will have a signup May 1 for grades 6 through 9, at which time the book titles will be given out. Meetings will be held June 22 and 23. For more information call 727-3228.

My husband, Joe, remains at Riverhead Care Center for rehab.

As I write this he’s been away from home for 53 days. He’s enjoying the recreational programs, chatting with the residents, making new friends, and working hard on his physical therapy so that he can get stronger and hopefully be home with his family soon. We miss him very much and can’t wait for his return. The nursing staff, aides, physical therapists, maintenance staff, recreational staff, and the food service and administration staff at the center make everything pleasant for the residents and their families. Joe thanks all those who have been visiting him, calling him and sending cards.
